Oil Mist Collectors for Swiss-Type Lathes

Swiss-type lathes are designed for precise, productive turning in a compact machine layout. Long production cycles, high spindle speeds, neat cutting oil or water-miscible coolant, and a relatively small enclosure can produce a persistent mist load. An oil mist collector draws contaminated air from the machine enclosure and separates suspended liquid before it escapes through doors, access panels, gaps, or the bar-feed area.

Collector selection should be based on the actual machine and process. A machine brand or model name is useful, but it does not by itself determine the required airflow, filtration, mounting, or maintenance arrangement.

Why Swiss-lathe oil mist applications need individual review

Two Swiss-type lathes can generate different mist conditions even when their external dimensions are similar. The cutting fluid, spindle speed, coolant delivery, material, tooling, cycle time, enclosure leakage, and door-opening pattern all influence the contaminant load.

Neat oil can create fine mist and, in demanding processes, visible smoke. Water-miscible coolant may create a different droplet load and can carry fine process contamination. The first step is therefore to identify what is actually present rather than choosing equipment from enclosure size alone.

  • Typical spindle speed and production cycle

Capture mist at the machine enclosure

The extraction connection should help maintain useful negative pressure inside the enclosure while the machine is operating. The inlet should be positioned so contaminated air is drawn toward the collector without interfering with bar feeding, moving components, access panels, doors, or normal service work.

A short, practical inlet route generally reduces avoidable resistance, but the route must also protect access and drainage. Sharp bends, restricted hose, undersized connections, and poor sealing can reduce effective capture even when a collector has a suitable nominal airflow.

The enclosure must not be treated as an airtight box. Bar-feed openings, cable passages, door seals, and other leakage paths affect how replacement air enters the machine. These conditions should be reviewed during selection and commissioning.

Airflow is one selection input

TINME lists centrifugal CNC oil mist collector options with nominal airflow from 600 to 2,000 m3/h at 50 Hz. These values are useful for comparing the product range, but airflow alone does not establish that a model is suitable for a specific Swiss lathe.

Selection should consider the enclosure, mist generation, inlet arrangement, operating cycle, and installation conditions together. A compact machine can still produce a demanding mist load, while a larger enclosure may have relatively controlled emissions. Exact 60 Hz airflow values require confirmation.

Compare machine-top, bracket, and floor-supported installation

Swiss machines often have limited free space around the enclosure and bar feeder. Depending on the confirmed machine structure and workshop layout, the collector may be considered for machine-top mounting, a side or wall-bracket arrangement, or a floor stand.

The support must be suitable for the collector weight, vibration, service loads, and site conditions. Machine-top installation should not be assumed to be acceptable without reviewing the machine manufacturer’s requirements and the available structure.

Whatever arrangement is selected, allow space to:

  • Isolate the collector safely
  • Open covers and inspect filters
  • Remove or replace the optional post-filter
  • Inspect the inlet and connections
  • Maintain the machine and bar feeder
  • Route separated liquid without backflow or leakage

Plan drainage before finalizing the mounting position

The centrifugal stage coalesces suspended liquid so it can move toward the drainage path. The drain should remain unobstructed and should not create a trap, backflow condition, or leak point.

Whether collected liquid can be returned to the machine depends on fluid compatibility, contamination, the machine’s coolant system, and the customer’s site procedure. It should not be promised as a universal arrangement.

Filtration and optional HEPA post-filtration

TINME centrifugal collectors combine a rotating separation stage with a multilayer filter. For a confirmed application involving micromist, smoke, or vapor, an optional HEPA post-filter may be reviewed as an additional stage.

The supplied TINME specification states performance up to 99.97% at 0.3 micrometers when the optional HEPA post-filter is used. The source specification does not state an H13 classification. This figure should not be presented as the performance of every standard configuration or as a substitute for application assessment.

When filter monitoring may be useful

TINME A+ models add a filter-condition monitoring function to the corresponding A model. The listed airflow, motor, inlet, weight, dimensions, filtration structure, and installation options remain the same as the matching A model.

Monitoring can provide maintenance information for machines that operate for long hours, but it does not replace inspection, safe isolation, or an application-specific maintenance plan.

Maintenance planning for continuous production

There is no responsible universal filter-replacement interval for every Swiss-lathe application. Inspection frequency depends on the coolant, process contamination, mist load, operating hours, inlet condition, drainage, and filtration configuration.

A practical inspection should include:

  • Inlet, hose, clamps, and seals
  • Drainage path and collected-liquid condition
  • Internal filtration stages
  • Optional HEPA post-filter and sealing surfaces
  • Mounting hardware and vibration condition
  • Monitoring indications, where fitted

Maintenance records should identify the machine, collector model, operating condition, observed filter state, work completed, and replacement parts. This helps establish a site-specific interval based on evidence.

Does a small Swiss lathe always need the smallest collector?
