Electrostatic and centrifugal oil mist collectors use different separation principles. The best choice depends on the machining process, coolant or oil, airborne contaminants, maintenance resources and the performance required at the machine.

How electrostatic oil mist collectors work

An electrostatic collector charges airborne droplets and captures them on oppositely charged collection surfaces. Its performance depends on correct sizing, clean collection cells and compatibility with the mist and contaminants produced by the process.

How centrifugal oil mist collectors work

A centrifugal collector draws mist from the machine enclosure and separates droplets through rotating separation, coalescing media and filtration stages. Depending on the configuration, an optional post-filter can provide a final filtration stage.

Factors to compare

  • Fluid and process: identify neat oil, water-miscible coolant and any other substances entering the airstream.
  • Particles and metal fines: confirm whether grinding dust, chips or other solids accompany the mist.
  • Airflow and enclosure: size extraction for the machine enclosure, leakage points and process conditions.
  • Maintenance: compare cell cleaning, filter inspection, replacement parts and the maintenance skills available on site.
  • Installation: consider mounting space, duct length, drainage, electrical supply, noise and access for service.
  • Target performance: define the required workplace and exhaust-air outcome before selecting equipment.

Safety and application review

Neither collection method should be selected from a generic comparison alone. Combustible materials, metal dust, unusual chemicals, high temperatures and other process hazards require an application-specific risk assessment by the machine manufacturer, equipment supplier and qualified site safety personnel.
